A Mixed Methods Analysis of Requests for Religious Exemptions to a COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement.Armand H. Matheny Antommaria, Elizabeth Lanphier, Anne Housholder & Michelle McGowan - 2023 - AJOB Empirical Bioethics 14 (1):15-22.
Background: While employers are increasingly considering and implementing COVID-19 vaccination requirements, little is known about the reasons offered by employees seeking religious exemptions. Methods: We conducted a mixed methods analysis of all the requests for religious exemptions submitted during the initial implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination requirement at a single academic medical center in the United States. Results: Five hundred sixty-five (3.4%) employees requested religious exemptions. At least 305 (54.0%) requesters had job titles suggesting that they had direct patient contact. Four hundred (...)

  6. Adjudicating rights or analyzing interests: ethicists’ role in the debate over conscience in clinical practice.Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2008 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 29 (3):201-212.
The analysis of a dispute can focus on either interests, rights, or power. Commentators often frame the conflict over conscience in clinical practice as a dispute between a patient’s right to legally available medical treatment and a clinician’s right to refuse to provide interventions the clinician finds morally objectionable. Multiple sources of unresolvable moral disagreement make resolution in these terms unlikely. One should instead focus on the parties’ interests and the different ways in which the health care delivery system can (...)

An Ethical Analysis of Hospital Visitor Restrictions and Masking Requirements During the COVID-19 Pandemic.Joshua K. Schaffzin, Laura Monhollen & Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2021 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 32 (1):38-47.
Nonpharmaceutical interventions to minimize the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 are necessary because we currently lack a vaccine or specific treatments. Healthcare facilities have adopted visitor restrictions and masking requirements. These interventions should be evaluated as public health measures, focusing on their efficacy, the availability of less-restrictive alternatives, and the minimization of the burdens and their balance with the benefits. These interventions, as well as exceptions, can be justified by the same analysis. For example, visitor restrictions (...)

A Gower Maneuver: The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities' Resolution of the "Taking Stands" Debate.Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2004 - American Journal of Bioethics 4 (1):24-27.
The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities debated for several years about whether it should adopt positions and, if so, on what range of issues. The membership recently approved an amendment to its bylaws permitting the Society to adopt positions on matters related to academic freedom and professionalism but not on substantive moral and policy issues. This resolution is problematic for a number of reasons, including the lack of a categorical difference between these types of claims and the Society's inability (...)

An Ambitious Goal: A Grounded, Informed, and Compelling Theological Bioethics.Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2023 - Hastings Center Report 53 (2):44-45.
In Disability's Challenge to Theology: Genes, Eugenics, and the Metaphysics of Modern Medicine (Notre Dame Press, 2022), Devan Stahl establishes an ambitious goal: develop a Christian bioethics that is metaphysically grounded, informed by the experience of disability, and culturally compelling. She argues that personhood is not the possession of certain abilities; all humans are worthy of dignity and respect because they are created by God in God's image. According to Stahl, persons should be valued for who they are and treated (...)

To the Editor: In the November–December 2010 issue, the Seattle Growth Attenuation and Ethics Working Group (“Navigating Growth Attenuation in Children with Profound Disabilities”) analyzed the arguments for and against growth attenuation in children with permanent, profound intellectual disabilities and identified conditions under which its use may be ethically acceptable. The working group’s conclusion is based on a particular construction of the issue that is not always justified. It focuses on the possibility that growth attenuation will increase children’s involvement in (...)

    Relational Potential versus the Parent‐Child Relationship.Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2019 - Hastings Center Report 49 (3):26-27.
In an article in this issue of the Hastings Center Report, Aaron Wightman and his coauthors attempt to address health care providers’ moral distress about acceding to parents’ requests to provide life‐sustaining medical treatment to children who have profound cognitive disabilities. They propose combining John Arras's relational potential standard and care ethics, and they argue that the capacity for caring relationships can provide an independent moral justification for honoring such requests. This combination is, however, unstable. Wightman et al.'s language of (...)

Inducing HIV Remission in Neonates: Child Rights and Research Ethics.Katherine Wade & Armand H. Matheny Antommaria - 2015 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 58 (3):348-354.
International child rights law has the potential to change the way children are viewed and engaged by all social actors. It provides a child-centered perspective on all areas of children’s lives, including research with neonates. It differs from some bioethical perspectives by clearly articulating affirmative obligations owed to children and requiring rigorous monitoring mechanisms. The CRC’s focus on affirmative obligations and establishment of monitoring mechanisms provide additional useful elements that are not present in the dominant form of American pediatric bioethics. An (...)
